Choice of characters

[edit]

@Mar vin kaiser This spelling is not attested AFAICT. I think using the characters from Min-Fang-Da isn't as appropriate as using 欶管 per MoE standard. MoE only gives 吸管 and 嗍管 as alternative forms. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 14:20, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Also, is much more common than for kóng, even though it's ambiguous. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 14:23, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung So in 闽南方言大辞典, kńg and koán uses 管, and kóng uses 栱. In MoE, all three use 管. Should we go for more for the attested (compared to the not attested) or for the less ambiguous one? Anyway, 栱 isn't a rare character, and the definition fits. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 14:34, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser: We always want a balance between attestation (more scientific) and "better fits" (本字, etc., which could lead us to a slippery slope towards bad prescriptivism). There wouldn't be ambiguity in this word if we use 管. 栱 isn't a rare character in itself, but it's not as common as 管 for kóng. Many dictionaries use 管 for kóng, including 台日大辭典, 甘字典, 臺灣閩南語辭典 and 普通话闽南方言常用词典. From a simple Google search, we can see that 嗍栱 is definitely out of the question (no attestation). 嗍管 looks good as well, so I think it could be made the main entry if not 欶管. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 14:56, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mar vin kaiser Why have we gone back on this decision? Also see the RFV discussion below. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 02:52, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Justinrleung: I forgot about this. Let me check later. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 09:01, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser: Any updates? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 16:56, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser: Thanks. I think I will have to delete 嗍栱 because it has previously failed RFV. I also think there are other entries with 栱 that should probably be moved to 管. What do you think? — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 04:19, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Mar vin kaiser Just wanted to check again on this. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 02:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: If we decided to use 管 instead of 栱, then of course we move all the entries to 管. There are many other Hokkien character standardizations to be done though, such as moving kē from 低 to 下, moving siûⁿ from 瘍 to 𣻸, for example. --Mar vin kaiser (talk) 07:18, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Chinese. Is it attested outside Wiktionary? RcAlex36 (talk) 11:01, 25 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
