"Indo-Iranian"

From what "Indo-Iranian" root word does the Mandarin word derive? 71.66.97.228 05:32, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

It's probably from the language spoken by the Dayuan, which was an Indo-European language. 《漢書‧西域傳上‧大宛國》：“漢使采蒲陶、目宿種歸。” ("Han Dynasty envoys collected grape and alfalfa seeds before they returned.") (note that 目宿 = 苜蓿 ("alfalfa"), another loanword from the same language). I don't know the exact word. Both loanword database and this dissertaion claim the origin was Elamite *būdawa, but Elamite was extinct by 4th century BC, and this is probably a Han Dynasty loanword. This article says it's from Persian buduwa or "New Persian" buda ("wine"). I don't know if such words exist in Persian. Hbrug 05:38, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
