- Ah that makes sense - I don't think it's clear enough in the article though. Ateji is the wrong word by the way - ateji is a Japanese concept but the sound is similar to "cool" only in Mandarin Chinese. I think it's different to ateji anyway, it's closer to being the Chinese equivalent of spelling foreign words using katakana in Japanese.
