Etymology[edit]
@Wyang I don't know how useful it is to say "from 胡", since 鬍 is just a 分化字. STEDT sets up the root *g-wu for this. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 02:12, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Justinrleung I think the emphasis of
{{och-l|胡|wattle; dewlap of an animal}}
was the definition part, to indicate that 鬍 (beard) < 胡 (獸頷下垂肉 in Hanyu Da Zidian). Wyang (talk) 02:18, 15 October 2017 (UTC)- @Wyang: Ah, ok. But looking at the comparison with other languages at STEDT, it seems like "beard" is the earlier meaning. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 02:24, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Justinrleung I'm not too convinced about the reconstruction... 胡 and 鬍 almost certainly had /*a/ as the vowel in Old Chinese. Wyang (talk) 02:34, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Wyang: Ok, but do you think it's worth mentioning? — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 02:40, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Justinrleung Certainly, since we (usually) love STEDT. :) Wyang (talk) 02:47, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Wyang: Done. — justin(r)leung { (t...) | c=› } 03:22, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
