An affordance is a quality of an object, or an environment, that allows an individual to perform an action.

seems to be the meaning of affordance ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affordance ) needs an expert JaapB 20:35, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've expanded it a bit. Equinox 17:06, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox I think our definitions/labels are now too narrow. Norman doesn't talk about user interfaces. And most doors aren't machines. – Jberkel 23:06, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for paying attention! If it's more in your ballpark than mine, then please fix it. I would still argue that Norman's text is saying "affordances like plates, knobs and slots have a certain function": so he's talking about the mechanism rather than the abstract opportunity-to-do-something. But I don't know for sure. I'm coming from a computer GUI viewpoint and I know the word has been somewhat appropriated. Equinox 00:00, 28 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
