The Greek prefix is ana-, but when the word ἀναχωρητής was borrowed by the Romans as anachoreta, for whatever reason the word came to be pronounced, and even written, as anchoreta. English words derived from this Latin variant spelling start with anchor- (but have nothing to do with the nautical device). Words that come more directly from Greek begin with anachor-. Some terms, in some senses, exist in both versions.  --Lambiam 12:55, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
