Although the Oxford English Dictionary includes barreter as an obsolete spelling of barrator, and the latter includes the gloss "quarrelsome person" (among others), it does not include any sort of variable resistor. Merriam Webster Online and Century each include barretter with two Ts, but not barreter (as far as I saw). The only barreter at OneLook is this one on Wiktionary. Could this be an error? Actually, this looks like it may be the relevant sense, but this is all I can see on GBooks. Any electrical engineers have more accessible attestation?
"Bolometers are microwave power detectors and may be categorized either as (1) barreters or (2) thermistors." (Harry Elliot Thomas, 1972, Handbook of microwave techniques and equipment, →OCLC)
