http://www.obviously.plus.com/lexicon.htm

Gash adj. Scrap or surplus material, especially timber. Also v.t. To destroy something, salvaging any material that may be reusable.

Gash Bar n. A temporarily rigged (q.v.) lighting bar (q.v.) , the lanterns on which are connected to dimmer (q.v.) outlets with tails (q.v.) . cf. Internally Wired Bar . ref.~L.X.

Gash Rack n. loc. The wooden frame in the A.D.C. yard used to store gash (q.v.) timber. Often a source of set building materials.

I can also testify to this sense of the word being used widely in the UK theatre industry but would struggle to find additional written sources as it's a slang term.

Presumably related to widespread historical use of this slang term in the British forces (http://www.hmscarysfort.co.uk/MessageBoard/Naval%20Expressions.htm) etc. and to its noun sense as 'rubbish' or junk.

Can Urban Dictionary be considered a citation? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gash

Also CF use of 'scratch' for a similar meaning - haphazard, casual, makeshift https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=dMdMAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA749&lpg=PA749&dq=gash+rubbish+makeshift&source=bl&ots=Bmn4tCZQTQ&sig=JEFj3FiDPexqz5eFLGxwc4jSKLw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi0-7f5hPLcAhWBbsAKHbSkDOoQ6AEwDXoECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=gash%20rubbish%20makeshift&f=false

I wouldn't say UD is a valid citation, and most of the links don't mention the use in the theatre industry. (And I know all about how hard it can be to find usages of a slang term) SURJECTION ·talk·contr·log· 17:01, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be sufficient to remove reference to 'theater' and leave it as just 'slang'? 86.178.66.95 17:03, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That could be citable, although the definition will probably need tweaking as well (the RFV could be removed at that point, since the definition is different). SURJECTION ·talk·contr·log· 17:05, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It seems beyond dispute in any case that it's a slang adjective for something below par, rubbish. I suspect the meaning of something which is temporarily used until the finished article is available is specific to theatre. Commonly it would be when we grab any old pieces of costume from store for the sake of photos or rehearsing. It'll do for the moment but is just jerry-rigged or whipped up quickly. 86.178.66.95 17:11, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rfv-sense "(slang, theater) makeshift; improvised; substituted.". I know it's slang, but I can't still find anything. SURJECTION ·talk·contr·log· 16:30, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
