Etymology[edit]

The Oxford Etymological dictionary denies connection with the synonymous Celtic words; but finds no sensible Germanic cognates! Therefore it means that it does not know! The etymology presented in this entry is obviously correct[8], and the English word may have been borrowed[6], or even more likely - due to the vowel changes - be carried down verbally[7].
