Strictly Speaking ....... Using water flow to dislodge material. Sometimes ore but, more often to remove overburden and expose a vein. A dam is built and then the water is released to rush downhill and scour a channel which had been prepared on the line of the vein. The preparation normally took many months. Old hushes can be recognised in Wales , the English Pennines and, no doubt, in many other parts of the world... mikeL 30-09-09 .
