Deletion debate

[edit]

The following information has failed Wiktionary's deletion process.

It should not be re-entered without careful consideration.

infraspecific taxon

[edit]

All three of these are SOP for infraspecific + taxon/taxa/taxons (the last is an incorrect plural, too, but that's not a reason for deletion). Chuck Entz (talk) 20:07, 3 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I would be inclined to keep this, as it appears (at first glance, at least) to be a specialized term within the field for which one can not substitute synonyms of either term to reach a technically correct equivalent. bd2412 T 04:37, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
That's more due to the fact that there aren't technically equivalent synonyms of either term in common use. One can talk about "taxa of infraspecific rank", though, so they're not fused together. I suppose "intraspecific names" might qualify as synonymous. Then there are sentences like "similar rules of formation and gender agreement apply to names for both infraspecific and specific taxa, but not to those for taxa above the rank of species." The ICZN discusses infrasubspecific taxa as well. Chuck Entz (talk) 07:46, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, and even though there aren't perfect synonyms, near synonyms are easily attestable. Plenty of hits for "infraspecific groups", "subspecific taxa", and similar pairings. Delete. —Caesura(t) 13:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
FWIW, not really worth tagging the plurals separately; if the singular is invalid, the plural is too. Mglovesfun (talk) 20:31, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Delete (I thought this was an easy one, but apparently bd2412 disagrees). I've done amateur morphological taxonomy charts, by the way, so I know something about the field (and far too much about the evolution of various obscure bones for which I ought to create Wiktionary entries). --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 03:57, 6 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
