@Lambiam Would /mama beː/ be an acceptable simple, broad transcription for this or would including tones be necessary? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 09:04, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- All I can say is that Huttar & Huttar (1994) usually do not include tones in their transcriptions when they are not distinctive, even though they always employ the narrow brackets [...]. I also notice that (for reasons I do not know) they appear to avoid the IPA symbol “ː”, writing instead, e.g., [yee] for the verb meaning “to hear”, Sranan Tongo yere. I have no specific knowledge of Aucan; I have to go with what one one can glean from such texts. --Lambiam 11:14, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Lambiam Thanks, so that doesn't seem essential for now. Regarding the avoidance of the length symbol, I have noticed the same in other texts. I suppose it is a convention among creolists based on the spelling, just like the use of [y] for [j].
