Etymology[edit]

Note correspondence with Chinese (niăn, OC *neːnʔ, "to take, to hold > to twist with fingers, to pinch"), (niăn, OC *neːmʔ, "to twist with fingers; to take"), (niăn, "to pinch, to drive out"), (niān, "to take or hold with fingers, to pick up") and PIE *nem- "to divide, distribute, allot, to take" (German nehmen, English nimble, Latin numerus, Old Irish neim, Ancient Greek νέμω).
