I think the John & Jill example is wrong. I have never heard the expression used in that context.
I think it should only be used like this:
John: Did you get any mail today? Jill: Not a sausage, I'm afraid.
John: Did you find anything at the shops? Jill: No, not a sausage.
Meaning: "not one single thing - not even a small insignificant sausage..."
- Agree 100%. In the example Jill sounds like she's having a stroke.
