pixulé/pichulé

[edit]

@Ungoliant_MMDCCLXIV there's been some back and forth editing with anon. Is it a separate form, or variant? – Jberkel (talk) 13:11, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's an alterantive spelling. Not even an alternative form, but a spelling! It seems that neither spelling is significantly more common or more standard than the other, so the one whose entry was created first has priority for being the lemma. — Ungoliant (falai) 13:48, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks. Mentioned form because pichulé is listed as having a plural whereas pixulé doesn't, but might be an oversight/mistake. – Jberkel (talk) 14:12, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

If it comes from Spanish pichuleo, the correct form can only be pichulé, which is the one more commonly used in books, novels, serious publications - whilst the second is more commonly used as slang & in informal writing, in which ch is usually abbreviated as x. It'd be incorrect to list pichulé as an alternative form of pixulé, as it pre-dates it. 177.133.7.202 14:25, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

There are several problems with your reasoning. Since this word is a slang borrowing from Spanish, there's no pressure to follow Spanish spelling; compare puxa. If you analyse the Google Books results, you'll see that in fact it is the spelling pixulé that has been used more commonly in serious publications (but not by much). Lastly, being older doesn't mean that a spelling isn't an alternative spelling, otherwise we would have to list português as an alternative spelling of Portuguez. How do you know that it is older anyway?
But actually, that's the wrong way of looking at our delemmatisation practices; both pixulé and pichulé are alternative spellings of one another, the question is which should have the main content, and unless there is a reasonable motive to prefer one or the other (like commonness or standardness), the one that was created first should [continue to] hold the content. — Ungoliant (falai) 15:30, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
