Use of "remix" to mean "cover"

My understanding is that, correctly, a remix is based on parts of the original recording, while a cover is a completely new version, a whole new recording, that just uses the same melody, lyrics, etc. However, there is very widespread confusion online by which people refer to covers as remixes. See e.g. the very long-running music site OverClocked ReMix, where the vast majority of tracks are new (covers) and not properly remixes. Equinox 23:29, 8 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
