- The OED has "Etymology: < rescue n. + grass n.1, so called on account of its hardy character (see quot. 1853)." and then "1853 B. V. Iverson in Soil of South Aug. 625/2 I have the seed of a foreign grass (now acclimated to the South) which is never injured by our severest cold; which stands our summer's heat; which is neither injured nor retarded by heavy rains..which will graze horses, mules, cattle, sheep, goats, hogs and poultry, from November to June..I have named it ‘The Rescue Grass’ of the South."
