Etymology: "software" or not?

[edit]

A hardlock isn't specific to hardware issues, so I think saying this derived from "software" is wrong. It's just the oppositionality with the word hard. Equinox 16:48, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mmmm, makes sense. But what if softlock was coined first, and hardlock came about by analogy? I have to admit, for all the time I spend talking about video games, I'm not the fountain of knowledge I sometimes think I am .... I've only heard softlock once, and hardlock never, so my impression when I saw these pages was that softlock was the original term. But that's just blind guessing, really.
