The French noun is said to mean "supper" in some places and "dinner" in others. Those are synonyms in many varieties of English... can anyone clarify, for each region/sense, whether the midday meal or the evening meal is meant? - -sche (discuss) 02:02, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

With my ex partner who's from Nord-Pas-de-Calais, we used this to mean supper as in a usually light meal eaten after dinner not long before going to bed. I don't have the depth of knowledge to give a full answer to this. Mglovesfun (talk) 21:20, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

That accords with fr.Wikt's entry, which says that in France, "souper" means "a meal taken in the night", while in Belgium, Canada, Switzerland and old French words, it means "the evening meal". - -sche (discuss) 21:28, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
