Talk:wijf

Is the Dutch word really so pejorative as the example sentence and the translation "bitch" imply? -- I don't mean to say that it's a neutral term, but I have a feeling that it can be jocular or maybe a little macho-like without really being offensive. (It's like this in German anyway. I think also in Dutch, but maybe I'm mistaken.) Kolmiel (talk) 20:11, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pinging Dutch speakers User:CodeCat and User:DrJos. (Note that "bitch" is actually toned-down compared to what was there previously, which was "cunt".) - -sche (discuss) 22:03, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's not used like in German at all. I can't think of any situation in which offense would not be taken at the word "wijf". At best, it could be used only in the absence of, or under full consent of the person it refers to. If a guy called his girlfriend "wijf" in her presence, then that would likely cause a row or the end of the relationship. —CodeCat 22:15, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
