@Vorziblix In view of the date of the Merneptah Stele and the generally Canaanite affiliation of the Levantine area during the Late Bronze Age, should this not rather be classed as a demonym? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 09:22, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo: Hi, sorry I took so long to get back to you. Unfortunately I’m not closely acquainted with the academic literature surrounding early Egyptian sources for Israel and Hebrew issues, though I know it’s quite voluminous, which is why I’ve been hesitant to issue any pronouncements (telling myself I’d get around to reading the literature eventually…). As far as I know, there’s some ongoing debate as to whether the term should be understood as a demonym or a toponym, since the determinative seems to imply a demonym but the textual context places it in a list of toponyms. If it is a toponym, its scope may have been much more restricted than later uses of the term. The Thesaurus Linguae Agyptiae treats it as a toponym. On the other hand, I have read some authors who assert that Egyptological opinion leans to the demonym side. Without a deeper knowledge of the relevant literature I can’t confidently claim to know how much weight to place on such assertions. Ideally we would choose one interpretation or the other while noting the existing debate, with thorough references to the major papers/works discussing the issue; I just wish I had the time and wherewithal right now to do the necessary research. — Vorziblix (talk · contribs) 09:14, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
