Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as terynse in 1397, attested with certainty as thernze in 1427. Borrowed from West Frisian Tearns, presumably derived from Old Frisian There (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. Compare Tirns.
