Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote John Ruskin's work Præterita. Outlines of Scenes and Thoughts Perhaps Worthy of Memory in My Past Life. (1886–1900, 3 volumes); the 1st edition (1885–1888; →OCLC) is not currently available online. The template can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=III.
  • |part=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from "Dilecta" in volume III, which has separate page numbering, specify |part=Dilecta.
  • |2= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from.
  • |date= – if quoting from a part of the work that is separately dated, such as a letter, use this parameter to specify the date in the format 7 June 1884 or June 7, 1884.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=v–vi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to an online version of the work.

In volume III, the pagination restarts from 1 in "Dilecta".

  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
