Etymology[edit]

First attested as tunuwerde around 819-825. Borrowed from West Frisian Ternaard. Originally a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian werd (terp, artificial mound used for habitation). The toponym was gradually reinterpreted to a compound of an inflected form of te (at) and aard (farmland).
