Dutch and the letter "g"

Hello. I've long been confused about this, so I thought that I would ask a native speaker to clear this up for me.

I was under the impression that in Dutch, the letter "g" is pronounced /ɣ/ (except at the end of a word). But in most of the audio files that we have here, "g" seems to be pronounced /x/.

Why is this?

Thank you in advance.

This is a dialectal variation. For some speakers, the phoneme merges with /x/.
