Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested with certainty as tonden in 1379-1380. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Proto-Germanic *tûn (enclosed space) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. Another possibility is a derivation from a term cognate with tondel (tinder), German zünden (kindle, ignite).

Pronunciation[edit]
