Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German twër, from Old High German dwerah, from Proto-Germanic *þwerhaz (cross, adverse). Cognate to German quer (crosswise) (compare Querwind (crosswind)), Dutch dwars (crosswise), Swedish tvär (across), Gothic 𐌸𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌷𐍃 (þwairhs, angry).
