From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáwdʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéwdʰ-o-s, from *bʰewdʰ- (to arouse; to be aware) +‎ *-os. Cognate with Sanskrit बोध (bodhá, wakefulness, awakening).
