Welcome![edit]

Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

Thanks for your contributions on Somali! Do make sure to pay attention to the style, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it :) Feel free to {{ping}} me if you need any help! Thadh (talk) 16:53, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thank you! Should I practice in the sandbox??

Well, you don't have to if you're confident, but using the "show preview" button is a good idea. Another tip: use reference templates. I've created {{R:so:Puglielli:2012}}, which you could use. For example, for an entry like samay, you could do {{R:so:Puglielli:2012|samay|page=737}} (or simply {{R:so:Puglielli:2012|samay}}), and it'll generate the whole reference by itself, so you don't need to copy-paste the whole name or even type it out. Make sure to use {{so-noun}}! You can give the gender and plural there, as well as plural gender, so it's quite handy. Thadh (talk) 17:25, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much. How can I add the gender and the plural could you give me some examples?

It's actually explained at the template, but I'll give a short explanation here: for example, náag should have the code {{so-noun|g=f|gpl=m|head=náag|pl=naagó}}. Note that the entries are given at pages without diacritics, while the headword is given with stress (hence náag). Hope that helps! Thadh (talk) 22:59, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Also, please sign your messages at talk pages and discussion pages (like WT:ID, WT:TR and WT:BP) with four tildes (~~~~); these shouldn't be in entries, but it's handy to know which message is whose, and when it was written :) Thadh (talk) 23:06, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Got it! (Abtanaad (talk) 23:12, 7 June 2021 (UTC))Reply
