Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Inherited vs borrowed[edit]

Hi, you seem to be quite good at this already, but I'm wondering if the phrases you've added in Louisiana Creole (like komen ça va) aren't, in fact, inherited from French ({{inh}}) rather than borrowed ({{bor}}). Also, you don't seem to be consistent in your IPA at komen lê zafær: it can be either /koˈmɑ̃ le zaˈfæɾ/ or /ko.mɑ̃ le za.fæɾ/ (if stress is always the same, as in French), but the combination of the two is just weird. Happy editing! Thadh (talk) 23:51, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Thadh: Hello! This is the first time that I'm using a talk page, so I hope I'm using it right. As you can imagine, I borrow a lot of templates, so I was not aware of the inherit/borrow difference till now. I don't really follow you regarding the <<komen>> stressing (as in, I'm not sure where I used /koˈmɑ̃/), so I'll trust your judgement. For the moment, I'm assuming the language is unstressed (so /ko.mɑ̃/), but I'm trying to verify that to be sure. And thank you for the help! Almost forgot the signature. I appreciate this edit you made: https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?diff=65550555&oldid=63749229&title=vouz%C3%B2t

I had noticed what I took to be that error about a month ago, and made a little to-do to come back and fix it. But when I arrived, you had already made the fix. 24.212.191.236 17:15, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
