Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! -- Tawker 18:48, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

lowercase?

[edit]

Your recent transwikis seem to be getting lost, as they are not in the "Transwiki:" pseudo-namespace, but instead in "transwiki:". I don't think that is correct - is it? --Connel MacKenzie T C 17:03, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've been told to switch to the lowercase version -- either way, what shows up on the logs should be correct. Let me know if they aren't. TheProject 17:08, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Entry names are supposed to be lowercase, but the pseudo-namespace should not, IIRC. So yes, the first character after the colon should be lower case, but it still should be "Transwiki:" not "transwiki:". Thanks for keeping these moving. --Connel MacKenzie T C 17:12, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just looking down the transwiki log and clicking some of the links, it seems that a lot of the Transwiki: articles redirect to their lowercase equivalent. I'm just wondering though -- does it actually matter? If I transwiki into lowercase and then link to lowercase in the log, it should still work. (Is stuff actually getting "lost"?) TheProject 17:20, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
"Lost" was perhaps inaccurate. It is more likely that entries will get needed attention if they are closer to what they shouold be. But since the Transwiki log itself links to wherever it is they ended up, it seems like they are not entirely lost after all. --Connel MacKenzie T C 17:32, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
In that case, I will go back to uppercase, but leave previous entries intact. TheProject 17:34, 16 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

templates and categories

[edit]

Could you please strip out all templates and categories from Wikipedia stuff that you transwiki here. That would save us the job of doing it later. SemperBlotto 22:13, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alright -- I'll also take out interlingual Wikipedia links too. (Although, I'm just thinking -- this stuff needs to be cleaned up to make it a dictionary type entry anyways, doesn't it? I mean, templates or no templates, what I'm pasting will be in no shape for Wiktionary either way.) TheProject 22:18, 20 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, maybe we can bot-formatulate the content - templates, though the actuall dicdef's would need some more work -- Tawker 19:58, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Transwiki

[edit]

Now that en.wiktionary sysops have the Import: page functionality, I'm not sure how we should proceed with transwikis. The Import: function transferrs full edit history, along with the entry. Perhaps we should discuss how to proceed in WT:BP? --Connel MacKenzie T C 21:15, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think I'll continue to do it manually until someone asks me to stop. Copying and pasting the edit histories should not be that much of a problem, I think. Please let me know if it is. TheProject 21:30, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Transwikiing is not compatible with GFDL. Since we have the opportunity to make it compatible, we should take it. — Vildricianus 21:51, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Eh? Why is that? I was under the impression that the whole point of copying over edit histories was to satisfy the GFDL. Anyways, I'll log what I've done so far and stop now, but I regret I'll be unable to use the import function. TheProject 21:53, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well that's only partly. Edit histories on talk pages can be goofed up, deleted, or forgotten to be moved along with the main entry... There are many advantages Special:Import has over manual copying, but I wouldn't want to take away your joy. I've posted here where I gave another couple of reasons. It's up to you though, but the transwikis would be much safer if imported correctly. — Vildricianus 22:13, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Vild, please, let's continue this discussion on my talk page, instead. That conversation has a more pleasant tone (which is needed, I think!) --Connel MacKenzie T C 03:40, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry, I'm not offended in the slightest. TheProject 03:57, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

w:Category:Move to Wiktionary

[edit]

Hi Connel, it's theProject. Could I bother you to please import Wiktionary-worthy entries listed in w:Category:Move to Wiktionary (there are about 200 right now)? I would be very much obliged. Thanks! TheProject 22:30, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reminder. I've been a bit occupied with today's events. Perhaps someone will get to it before I do tomorrow night. --Connel MacKenzie 08:03, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've started...finished the As so far. I'll update the log when I finish the page. Total of 197 entries... --Connel MacKenzie 05:21, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
BTW, thanks for the reminder. --Connel MacKenzie 05:22, 12 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
