Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

Please read through WT:EL: if the usage example at egopetal is a quote from the reference, it should be formatted as a quote, probably using the {{quote-book}} template, rather than as a usage example with a footnote. Also, the usage I find via Google Books (you should always check for usage before creating an entry for a rare word) seems more general than just the body- one book even applies it to nations. @Chuck Entz: Thanks for the welcome :)
No, the usage example is not a quote. The sentence in which the word appears in the article is so highly context dependend that I thought it would be better to make up a usage example.
I checked for usage, too, and found several other entries, so I was reasonably sure that "egopetal" wasn't just a word hyper-specific to a small area of research. I looked into one of them and didn't understand how the word was used in that context. I was actually working when I came across the rare word and took as much time off as I could justify to create this new article. Feel free to add other definitions to the page.--Zamomin (talk) 10:38, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
EDIT: Sorry, I just saw that you edited the article. I thought I would get a notification about this, but it was only on my watchlist. (It has been a while since I interacted in a substantial way with a wiki project.) The new definition is definitively applicable to a wider range of circumstances, but I think now the example sentence and the link don't fit as well as with the old definition.--Zamomin (talk) 10:52, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
