Etymology[edit]

Attested as Ewijk Sluis in 1839-1859. Compound of Van Ewijck (a surname) and sluis (lock, sluice). The village is named after Daniël Jacob van Ewijck van Oostbroek van de Bilt, a former King's commissioner of Noord-Holland who was involved in the empolderment of the Anna Paulowna polder.
