The Roman name was Latin Veneti, a Gaulish/Celtic tribe whose name likely shares a Proto-Indo-European origin with other similar sounding tribes, from Proto-Celtic *wenyā (kindred, family), from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to strive). More at Veneti.
