Etymology

[edit]

Vortum is first attested as Vortum in 1526. Mullem is first attested as molna in 1152. The etymology of Vortum is uncertain: the toponym is potentially a compound of voorde (ford, crossing) and heem (home, settlement). Mullem is derived from Old Dutch molne (mill), later reinterpreted as a compound of molen (mill) and heem (home, settlement). Formerly two indepedent hamlets.
