From Middle High German wambeis, from Old French wambais, from Medieval Latin wambāsium, from Frankish *wamba, from Proto-Germanic *wambō (belly; womb). Doublet of Wamme (dewlap), Wampe (potbelly, paunch). More at gambeson.
