From Middle High German wīle, from Old High German wīla, from Proto-Germanic *hwīlō. Cognate with Danish hvile (rest), Old Norse hvíld (rest, pause), Gothic 𐍈𐌴𐌹𐌻𐌰 (ƕeila, interval, time period), English while.
