Etymology[edit]

First attested as Nieuw-Schoonebekerveld in 1936. Compound of Dutch Low Saxon weit (buckwheat) and veen (peat bog, marsh). The village was named after a type of slash-and-burn agriculture involving buckwheat once frequently practiced in Drenthe.
