First attested as uuerken [read: uuerkendia] in 918-948. Compound of an ancient hydronym derived from Proto-Germanic *werk- (twist, turn) suffixed with the hydronymic suffix *-nd- and the dative plural form of Old Dutch hof (farmstead, homestead).
