Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as de wisepe and wesepe in 1200. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of Proto-Germanic *wese- (“pasture”) or *wisi- (“good”) and *apa (“river, stream”). A derivation from Proto-Indo-European *wis- (“flow, flow away”) or *weis- is also possible. Compare Weesp, Wezep and Wezup.
