- (Friesland) First attested as weyrum in 1335. Borrowed from West Frisian Wierum, presumably derived in turn from the dative plural form of Old Frisian werve (“artificial mound used for habitation”).
- (Groningen) First attested as uuirem in 855. Derived from the dative plural form of Old Frisian *wîr (“artificial mound”).
