Categories and left menu synchronisation

[edit]

The time has come to vote for the best universal left menu and categories structure (for instance Category:Alphabets). At the present moment I'm still clipping an ideal template in the French embassy, in order to eventually finally propose it as the logo vote. JackPotte 06:42, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you mean. What am I looking at in Category:Alphabets, and where does the left menu go? Michael Z. 2009-05-31 19:13 z
Sorry but the current contrast is located between the international left menus (navigation and toolbar contents) and the subcategories of alphabets (eg: the Spanish wikt separates oriental and occidental alphabets and so on). JackPotte 07:07, 1 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Changes to these site-wide things need to be discussed on WT:BP where everyone can see them... The side-bar should link to the pages that are useful to a particular project, I don't see how that can be standardised unless you force all other wiktionaries to have a "Random entry by language" button (though I do think that our side-bar could be improved, maybe we should replace the Community portal with Welcome, Newcomers - and Recent Changes is more of a tool than navigation). Also, don't forget that unlogged in users get given a feedback box. Category structure, although it can be superficially similar across all Wiktionaries suffers from the fact that translation does not preserve meaning, and so there are likely to be classifications that feel more natural for speakers of a certain language (this is part of why we have lots of seperate Wiktionaries). So, what would the force of this vote be? Is there something that all others have already voted on? Would it be mandatory for us and then optional for everyone else? How are we going to have input from other wiktionaries? What is the benefit of the standardization to en.wikt contributors, to WMF, to tech resources folks, to users?
We seem to even have trouble with a standard logo because language and scripts are so much at the heart of a dictionary and not readily dispensed with in the logo. If we can't do that, what would be the point of the other standardization? DCDuring TALK 00:14, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
More than the Wiktionary:Beer_parlour#Embassy or Meta, this kind of page would be exclusively reserved for import/export. The benefits for users would depend on the ambassadors who would play the game by importing and exporting the best. All other wikis should rapidly vote for this kind of page, already adopted in French. JackPotte 08:32, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

German prefixes

[edit]

Some German prefixes have been detected with some capitalised letters, we should thus redirect them towards the lower-case ones. JackPotte 04:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Transparent words compression

[edit]

We should study in all Wiktionaries the idea to compress the each language terms redundancies (eg: in a list menu), like the 90 of fr:Malta (the 16 Malta might be also changed in lighter, because they only differ by their few related terms). JackPotte 04:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

New help page.

[edit]

I've started Help:How to create basic entries on other Wiktionaries, which I hope will allow editors to move disallowed content (such as foreign language translations) from here to other Wiktionaries. Thoughts and additions welcome. --Bequw τ 05:08, 4 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
