Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as huilpa between 840-849. Etymology unknown. Potentially a compound of Proto-Germanic *hwelpjô- (whelp, young dog) or *hwelp- (scream, roar) and *apa (river, current). Both interpretations of the first element are unsatisfactory: the former lacks a naming motive, the latter does not entirely fit with the oldest attestations of the toponym. A derivation from Proto-Indo-European *kewel (shining, sparkling) has also been proposed.
