[edit]Attested as Winkewierd in 1874. Compound of either Middle Dutch Winken (“a personal name”) or wink (“a kind of goose, bean goose”) and Middle Dutch weyert (“pond, puddle near a mill”). The first element was originally the name of a watermill.
