Etymology[edit]

First attested as wermere in the 12th century. Derived from a hydronym, potentially derived in turn from a compound of Old Dutch wer (fishing weir) and mere (lake) or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *werm (water). Compare Warmenhuizen and Warmond.
