Etymology

From Middle High German zarge (side wall, frame, embankment), from Old High German zarga (rim, side wall), from Proto-Germanic *targǭ (edge), from Proto-Indo-European *derǵʰ- (to catch, grasp). Akin to Old Norse targa (small shield). More at targe.
