From Proto-Balto-Slavic (compare Latvian asara), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱru-, from compound *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- ‎(eye bitter) (compare *dáḱru-). Cognate with Ancient Greek δάκρυ ‎(dákru), Sanskrit अश्रु ‎(aśru).
