Last part from Old Norse vernd, vǫrn (defence), from Proto-Germanic *warīniz (warding off, defense), from both *warjaną (to ward off, defend against, stop), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to watch, guard, heed, notice) + and from *-īniz (forms abstract nouns), from *-ij(i)- and *-niz (forms abstract nouns), from Proto-Indo-European *-nis.
