Etymology[edit]

From Old High German abaneman, from Proto-Germanic *abanemaną. Equivalent to ab- +‎ nää. Cognate with German abnehmen, Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌽𐌹𐌼𐌰𐌽 (afniman).
