Etymology[edit]

Ancient Greek ἄγνωστος (ágnōstos, ignorant, not knowing) (see a- (not), gnosis) + -opsia. Literally, "not knowing what one sees".

Coined by S. Zeki and D. H. ffytche in 1998.[1][2]
